What’s Coming in the 2024/25 Alpine Ski World Cup Season?

Marcel Hirscher Back! Marcel Hirscher, the legendary Austrian ski champion, retired five years ago but is making a comeback at 35. This winter, he'll return to competitive skiing—this time racing for the Netherlands. "I'm really excited about it," he said earlier this year. At a press conference in Zoetermeer, Hirscher shared his plans for his return to the slopes, showing his determination to compete again. Ski fans can look forward to watching him back in action this winter.

No Zermatt Comeback The season kicks off with the traditional giant slalom in Sölden at the end of October. Unlike previous years, there won’t be another attempt to host races in Zermatt due to weather challenges. Instead, both men and women will head to Levi and Gurgl in mid-November for the first time.

North American Stops The World Cup will then move to North America. The men will compete in Beaver Creek for a week, while the women have a longer three-week stint, with races in Killington, Tremblant, and Beaver Creek.

Classic Venues and Surprises All the classic locations are back on the calendar: Val Gardena, Garmisch, Adelboden, Flachau, Schladming, and Cortina. Kitzbühel will see a return of the Super-G on the famous Streif course, replacing the controversial double downhill event.

World Championships in Saalbach The 2025 World Ski Championships will be held in Saalbach from February 4-16, with a new team combination event making its debut, replacing the less popular individual combination race.

Season Finale in Sun Valley To close the season, the tranquil Sun Valley in the USA will host the World Cup finals, a first for the resort.

New Safety Measures In an effort to improve athlete safety, airbags will be mandatory for downhill and super-G races starting this season, with cut-resistant underwear becoming a requirement for all disciplines in 2025/26.
