Long-Range Weather Forecast: Winter 2024-2025

Recent findings from the National Weather Service (NWS) indicate that the current ENSO-neutral phase is expected to continue for several months. However, there’s a 66% chance that La Niña will emerge between September and November, with a 74% likelihood of it persisting through the Northern Hemisphere winter (November-January).

With La Niña likely on the horizon, it’s important to understand its potential impact on winter weather in Europe.

Impact of La Niña on European Weather

The effects of La Niña extend beyond the Pacific Ocean and influence the weather across Europe. According to the University of Leeds, the interaction between high pressure over the Azores and low pressure over Iceland plays a crucial role in determining the jet stream's path. This jet stream is vital as it carries moisture across the Atlantic, significantly influencing where rain—and snow—falls in Europe.

Leading climatologists are optimistic about the potential for a La Niña winter, which is often associated with colder temperatures across the continent. The Weather Outlook explains that while El Niño can bring warmer winters, La Niña typically results in colder conditions, giving us reasons to be hopeful for favourable skiing weather.
